i'm curious as to what the the typical medical exam is checking and in particular if they drug test. i'm thinking of getting my private pilot license and i like to smoke grass now and then. thanks :)

Looking for flight instruction in LA

Hey pilots!

For my 40th b-day I've decided to gift myself with flying lessons... something I've
wanted to do for over 20 years (about time, no?). My question: How does one
rate flight instructors/schools? Aside from meeting someone in person and seeing
if you "vibe", are there other criteria I should be aware of? Is there a guide to
schools or anything?

And finally, can anyone recommend a place/instructor in LA. I live near the Santa
Monica airport, but will go anywhere within an hour if its worth it...

Where do you get your weather?

I'm actually a meteorologist that works with private jets, so my question to the rest of you. Where do you get your weather? Do you do your own online? call somebody? Don't check the weather (shame on you)? And which sites do you use the most?

Don't Support A New Ban on Scissors

It seems that we have a little game going on over here.

Every day someone posts a message asking for people to support the flight attendants union's request to reinstate the ban on scissors. Every time I see it, I post a polite note disagreeing with that position.

Indeed, on this tribe, several other members have AGREED with me.

So where are the messages?

There are only three ways an entire THREAD on Tribe can disappear:

1. Deleted by Tribe Staff;

2. Deleted by Tribe Moderator; or

3. Deleted by original poster.

So, if you disagree with reinstating the ban on scissors, please post that feeling here.

Instrument currency for the occasional flier

How are you IFR pilots keeping your currency up? I am just getting back in the flying game after a 10 year absence and plan on brushing off my rating and putting it to good use.

I have been flying a flight sim to knock some of the rust off my scans and procedures but will have to get in a real plane at some point. Just wondering how the rest of you are doing with it.

What Headsets Do you Use

Bought myself a pair of used pair of Bose X's on EBAY for christmas. Damn these things rock. They are lighter, quiter and clearer than my old (3years old) 20XL LightSpeeds. So the LightSpeeds are regulated to co-pilot status. Nothing like flying a mint 1958 Ercoupe with state of the art headsets. I use to get thumbs up before but now I get a wow look now also.

Palo Alto to BRC Seats Available

A buddy is not going for this year’s burn I couldn’t talk any hotties into going so once again I’m offering a seat or two on my plane.

I have one $200 ticket available and the airplane cost per seat is $100 each way. Not bad for a Cessna 310 ride to the playa. Major baggage has to go by ground.

Palo Alto to BRC Dates: Monday and Tuesday
BRC to Palo Alto: Flexible Sunday or Monday

BTW Palo Alto is in between San Francisco and San Jose Int’l airports and I’ll work with folks coming from out of the area to get there.

Bay area ground school recommendations?

So I've decided to persue a Private Pilot's license, with the ultimate goal of getting a twin rating. (Hey dad, can I borrow the Beech?)

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a good ground school to start off with. I live in Redwood city, work in pleasanton, so almost anywhere in the bay area is a decent place. I've seen schools range from 100 to 300 dollars and wondered if there's really any difference?

Anyone have experience with the school taught by Kyp at West Valley Flying Club in Palo Alto?

HI I am hoping to fly from NJ to CA this year. Just looking for helpful advice and tips. MY plan is to leave from Trenton/ Robbinsville and land in San Diego. I figure that the trip should take about 35 hours. My concern of course are the Rockies and the weather. Did I mention I am doing this in my 95hp Forney Aircoupe. CA here I come.

A Kiwi friend of mine got me hooked by taking me up in his open cockpit blue and yellow little "experimental" airplane and flying me over the Black Rock Desert in Nevada a bunch of times - but he's back in New Zealand for good.

so if there are any Bay Area pilots around looking for an appreciative passenger I'd love to be up in the air again. You fly.

A pane of twenty stamps (ten designs) entitled American Advances in Aviation build on the popular Classic American Aircraft collection issued in 1997. Aircraft chosen for this new stamp pane illustrate American innovations and technological contributions to military, commercial, and general aviation during the 1930s, '40s and '50s. The following ten aircraft are featured on stamps:

Boeing's 247 and B-29 Superfortress;
Consolidated's PBY Catalina and B-24 Liberator;
Lockheed's P-80 Shooting Star;
Grumman's F6F Hellcat;
Republic's P-47 Thunderbolt;
Northrop's YB-49 Flying Wing;
Engineering and Research Corporation's Ercoupe 415; and
Beechcraft's 35 Bonanza.
Depicted in the header illustration are the Hughes H-1 racer and Boeing's YB-52 Stratofortress.

All are military but the classic V tail bonanza and my favorite way ahead of its time Ercoupe.

Is it me, or are the controllers of the Bravo over Long Island TRYING to get you in situations where you are gonna get your ticket yanked???
The last two times I went, I had to call NY TRACON and explain why I flew XYZ way. Of course it was because I was directed to...check the tapes. Unnerving, to say the least.
Anyone else with a similar experience?

I am guessing that everyone out there is flying and are too busy to post new topics. So lets post the stories of your flights. I myself am flying about 5 hours a week trying to get over 200 hours of flight time this year. Most of the time is in a rudderless and ruddered Ercoupe (Aircoupe - with rudders). Cheap fun flying.

Did you guys see tonight's story on the threat posed by general aviation. I was so mad I fired off a rebuttal. Here's part of it:

Your story on the evening broadcast, Jan. 14, 2004, on the threat by terrorists using General Aviation was sensationalistic and irresponible. The Aircraft Owners and Pilot's Association representing over 400,000 licenced pilots was not represented in your story. Instead you interview one guy at private strip. My two seater car will carry more weight than half the private planes in this country. The point that the 9-11 terrorists learned on small planes was insignificant, all pilots learn single engine planes first. Your point that a suicidal kid stole a plane and hit a building was a very poor example of the supposed threat posed by small planes for two reasons, first very little damage actually occurred, secondly that was the only incident in the two years since. I guess you forgot to run a story on the threat posed by rental vans.

Hi, as a way of introduction I used to be a corporate pilot flying King Airs, Piper Navajos and most single engine planes.
Most of my flying time was made in Peru where MEA is FL 21 to FL 25!!! in some areas.
I also flew in Hawaii from Island to Island, during a vacation trip I rented a C-172. But one of my best memories is fliying out of Meiggs field, the views of Chicago downtown were unbeliebable!
I specialize now in Luxury real estate (waterfront properties) in the Miami area. Let mme know if I can be of any help around here.

Washington DC TFR

Hey just in case you wanted to fly into an airport within the DC TFR, dont do it or call the airport first. Unless to you are a tenant of the airport which you intend to fly into you will get yourself into big trouble. I want to fly into Colleg Park airport and vist the museum and the airport manager informed me that it was not a good idea. You can fly to an airport just outside and rent a car, he suggested. But then again thats not why I am a pilot, I could rent a car and not be one. Oh wellllllll.

shutdown above former Yugoslavia about
3 weeks after when I'm made this photo.
